CED is providing Technical Support to KRWSA and Suchitwa Mission for the Management Second Generation Sanitation needs of the State, Solid Waste and Liquid Waste Management. Under the project ‘Consultancy to Provide Technical Assistance to Suchithwa Mission and KRWSA in the Implementation of Rural Sanitation’,
Swachh Bharat Mission (SBM) launched on 2nd October, 2014
The strategies on SWM, LWM and FSSM for Kerala developed as part of the deliverable of the project "Consultancy to Provide Technical Assistance to SM and KRWSA in the Implementation of Rural Sanitation - Draft submitted
Rural Kerala was declared Open Defecation Free (ODF) on November 1, 2016. Kerala is the first state with high population density to achieve this recognition. About 174,720 toilets were constructed in 941 village panchayats across all the 14 districts.

Centre of Excellence

The Ministry of Urban Development, Government of India has established Centres of Excellence (CoEs) in the area of Urban Development Untitledand Urban Transport in reputed institutions in the country to create the necessary knowledge base for improving municipal service delivery and management. The basic objective of these CoEs is to foster cutting edge and cross cutting research,capacity building and technical knowledge base in the area of urban development. The CoEs will address urban development issues at national, state and local levels and will provide support to states and local governments.

The Ministry has sanctioned a Centre of Excellence to Centre for Environment and Development (CED) on “Solid Waste and Wastewater Management” considering its expertise and experience in these sectors.

The main objective of the CoE at CED is to develop:
(i) Strategy and Framework for Solid Waste and Wastewater Management in the ULBs
(ii) Capacity Building and Training to different target groups, and
(iii) Establishment of a Knowledge Centre on SWM and WWM.

Centre for Environment and Development, Thiruvananthapuram (CED) is the Centre of Excellence (CoE) of Ministry of Urban Development, Government of India on“Solid Waste and Wastewater Management”. The main objective of the CoE is to develop (i) Strategy and Framework for Solid Waste Management (SWM) and Wastewater Management (WWM) in the Urban Local Bodies (ULBs) of India (ii) Capacity Building and Training to different target groups and (iii) Establishment of a Knowledge Centre on Solid Waste and Wastewater Management.
